The fruit of the Wildlife Mayhaw Trees is actually large berries that are bright red and mayhaws begin to ripen during May and June, depending on how far South, the mayhaw trees are growing. The Wildlife Mayhaw tree has been primarily used in landscapes as a human food source and mainly for jelly making. The Wildlife Mayhaw Tree hybrids were obtained and collected from various hybridizers in South Carolina and Georgia, and mayhaws are well adapted to the growing conditions in these humid areas to produce significantly high quality berry fruit without problems from insects or disease, and the mayhaw fruit ripening berries during the month of May provides an early spring food source for wildlife animals.
• Wildlife Mayhaw Trees bloom from January through March, and the berry fruit begins to ripen in mid-April and continues for three weeks. At present some of the hybrid mayhaw plants do not have specific names, but only numbers, that are recorded by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station, so as to give the buyer a chance to purchase future named improved varieties, before scientists decide to name and release them to the public. For many years Wildlife Mayhaw Trees were only found in swamps, and many people didn't know that animals ate these treats, since people normally stayed out of the swamps.
