Wildlife Chinquapin nuts grow inside prickly, sharp burrs that are similar to chestnut burrs, but the chinquapin cluster of nuts only contains one nut per pod instead of multiple. Chinquapins are also smaller in dimension and content than chestnuts, and Chinquapins are easier for most birds to crack open than is the chestnut. Usually, the sweetest nuts of the Chinquapin is harvested in September. Nuts which are harvested quickly for humans before the wildlife animals arrive under the Chinquapin tree where the nuts are eaten quickly in later months when flocks of birds migrate and consume the nutrient-heavy Chinquapin for energy.
