Joshua Yucca

The Joshua Tree, Yucca brevifolia, was named by the Mormans and also is known out West as the Yucca Palm tree because of its weird shape and canopy. Some of these Joshua trees in Utah have been documented to exceed a thousand years of age. This huge evergreen Yucca tree forms a gigantic root network that can extend 36 feet from the classic mother trunk shape. Cold Hardy to zone 6.• The Joshua Tree 'Yucca brevifolia' grows taller than most yuccas, and the lily-white flowers appear in the spring around March or April when given optimal rainfall and mature into brown seed pods during the summer. The sharpened spikes cause painful, screaming experiences, almost as bad as a wasp sting. One wonders if the sharp point emits some kind of deadly venom. The plant seems to offset from the bottom and grows into giant community clusters, that offer a beautifully flowering anti-burglar yucca barricade.

The Joshua Tree Yucca is a Western version of the 'Spanish Bayonet' except that it forms a tree like trunk with woody branches and limbs, that terminate with long evergreen, sharply pointed leaves with fine-toothed edges. There are mature Joshua Tree Yucca trees in the West that are 40 ft. tall. Mass plantings of Joshua Yucca trees are spectacular on commercial landscapes. The Joshua Tree Yucca can grow 8 feet tall and then branching begins like trees.
