The thornless canes of the Black Satin bush are semi-erect, vigorous and disease free, however, the blackberry plant stems need some support when loaded with berries, because of the heavy weight of the berries that can occasionally cause some plants to touch the ground. The weight of the berries is sometimes not lifted high enough to be counter balanced off the ground during maximum berry production to prevent the mud from splashing up on the blackberries, and that can contaminate the blackberries. The ebony colored blackberries produced by these trailing, vigorously growing bushes are very large, firm, and when completely ripe are a jet black in color with tiny scattered red circular surface cells that give the berry a slightly tart flavor that balances the ultra-sweetness of the juicy berries.
