This brilliant yellow-flowered, hybrid shrub begins its early spring flowering before most other trees and shrubs wake up from the winter snow. The Forsythia 'Spring Gold' plants are completely dormant during the fall and winter, and suddenly in the spring, the bare stems and twigs are suddenly surrounded with bright yellow flowers that can keep coming for weeks. During the fall the leaves are colored as brightly yellow just like the four-petaled flowers in the spring, and as they age, subtle purple streaks of color develop. The Spring Gold forsythia plants can be grown as containerized plants, but most popularly are planted in the landscape under deciduous trees, so that the brilliant lighting above the leafless trees reaches the forsythia shrubs planted underneath. Unlike most flowering shrubs a few branches of the forsythia can be cut off the shrubs and placed indoors in vases filled with water, so that the branches are forced to flower prematurely as a floral specimen to enjoy during the gloomy winter days.
