Many blueberry growers are now recommending the 'Ochlockonee' cultivar to replace the older standard and premium, commercially-planted 'Tifblue' bushes, the most popular and widely planted blueberry cultivar. The Ochlockonee blueberries ripen one week later in the season than the 'Tifblue' cultivar, and the berry size is somewhat larger than the 'Tifblue'. The 'Ochlockonee' blueberry plants require 650 to 700 chill hours per season to begin fruiting, and the flowers will generally escape damage from the early frosts from established blueberry planting areas of Middle Georgia.
• The 'Powderblue' blueberry plant is usually recommended as the best pollinator and most reliable companion blueberry cultivar for cross pollination of the 'Ochlockonee' blueberry plant. The yields of the 'Ochlockonee' blueberries is very high, and that means big profits in the future for the commercial growers who use the mechanical harvester to gather their crop for the grocery market.
